The 2013 Oscars

Standard

The Academy Awards (also called the Oscars) were held on Sunday. Did you watch? If you missed it, here’s the Oscars Winners List.

The big winner of the night was Argo, a movie about a rescue operation involving six Americans during the Iranian hostage crisis in 1979.

This CNN article describes this year’s Oscar ceremony as politically-charged, because not only were Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, and Lincoln nominees, but the first lady, Michelle Obama, announced the winning film.

Have you seen any of the films? How do you think the 2013 nominees compare to 2012? Last year’s winner was The Artist:

Best Rock’n’Roll Movies

Standard

Rolling Stone Magazine recently asked their readers to name their top 10 rock and roll themed movies of all time: Readers’ Poll: The Best Rock Movies of All Time. The results were highly controversial, as many readers disagreed with the poll (see their explanation on the top movie).

Here’s the list:

10. Quadrophenia

9. School of Rock

8. The Commitments

7. The Doors

6. A Hard Day’s Night

5. Tommy

4. This Is Spinal Tap

3. Almost Famous

2. The Wall

1. The Runaways

Have you seen any/all of these movies? Do you agree with the ranking or (like so many others) are you disappointed by it?

I’m glad to see Almost Famous on the list, it’s one of my all-time favorites (and the soundtrack is amazing)! Here’s one of the best scenes:

Although, I also like Pirate Radio (not on the list):

Office Space

Video

Looking for a movie to watch at home this weekend? I had mentioned Office Space to some of you, and now I’m finally posting about it. It’s a comedy about disgruntled office employees at a software company in the 1990s, and their plan for revenge. Muahaha! (that’s an evil laugh) Here’s the trailer:

Christmas Movies

Standard

Well, the weather starting to look a bit more like the Christmas season that I know. Before it warms back up again (probably by the afternoon), snuggle up and watch a Christmas movie! Here’s a list of some of my favorites:

Animated Movies:

The Grinch Who Stole Christmas (here’s a song from the animated movie)

The Polar Express (here’s the trailer)

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

The Muppet Christmas Carol (here’s a song from the movie)

Comedies:

Love Actually (A beautiful, funny, heart-warming film. Here’s the trailer)

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (Classic Chevy Chase comedy. trailer)

Elf  (This movie is hilarious! Here’s a clip)

Home Alone (Mi Pobre Angelito) Here are some of the funniest moments:

Scrooged (A modern-day — well, in 1988 — version of A Christmas Carol)

Classics:

It’s A Wonderful Life (This is a Christmas film you can’t miss. Whole movie)

A Christmas Story (I love this funny movie! It’s so quintessential to the holiday that TNT plays the movie repeatedly all day on Christmas. Here are a few clips)

Christmas also makes an appearance in some of the best romantic comedies, so now is also a good time for:

Sleepless in Seattle

Bridget Jones’ Diary

You’ve Got Mail

It’s Halloween! Watch a (somewhat) Scary Movie!

Hotel Transylvania is also in theaters now:

Frankenweenie will be in theaters on Nov 1:

And if you’re looking for something to watch at home, I recommend…

Rainy Day Got You Down?

Standard

Are you feeling blue? Does this rainy weather get you down?

What a great day to watch a movie (in English)! What movies can you recommend? Have you seen Woody Allen’s latest movie, To Rome With Love?

What about his last movie, Midnight in Paris?

If not, it seems you can still catch To Rome With Love at Cines Del Siglo. And Midnight in Paris is playing at El Cairo Cine this Saturday the 15th.
